A better understanding of how liver cancer develops

10 December 2013
The Hamburger Krebsgesellschaft e.V. has awarded Dr. Denise Heim the “Research Award 2013” for her work “Retroviral insertional mutagenesis in telomerase-immortalized hepatocytes Identifies RIPK4 as novel tumor suppressor in human hepatocarcinogenesis”. The molecular mechanisms that transform a healthy liver cell in the course of chronic liver inflammation in a malignant tumor cell are only incompletely understood. Yet, a deeper understanding of these molecular changes could be the key to new therapeutic approaches. Dr. Heim was able to identify a genetic mutation that is involved in the degeneration of liver cells.
